Finding a Therapist
Finding a therapist who understands your identity, culture, community, or lived experience can make a real difference in how comfortable you feel asking for help.
It can also be hard to do. Directories are inconsistent, availability changes, and searching while you are already struggling is its own kind of work.
The directories below can help you look by identity, location, specialty, or cost. I've gathered them here because people ask, and because I would rather you find the right therapist than no therapist.
Therapists of Color
Minnesota Mental Health Providers of Color

The Weight Room

We R Native

LGBTQ+ Affirming

Sliding Scale & Lower Cost
Open Path Psychotherapy Collective
A nonprofit directory connecting people with therapists offering reduced-cost sessions, with filters for cost, location, specialty, identity, and other preferences. Sessions are generally $40–$70, with a one-time membership fee.
You Are Not Imagining the Shortage
As of 2024, 87 percent of Minnesota's licensed social workers identified as white, compared with 78 percent of the state's population. Among Minnesota's licensed counselors, 89 percent identified as white and 93 percent spoke only English in their practice.
Nationally, the picture is similar. About 83 percent of psychologists in the United States are white, in a country where roughly 60 percent of the population is.
If you have spent months looking for a therapist who shares your background or speaks your language, the difficulty is structural. It is not a sign that you are asking for too much.

A Few Things Worth Knowing
Identity match is one factor, not the only one. Research suggests many clients feel more understood by a therapist who shares aspects of their background. It matters. It also does not guarantee fit, and a therapist who does not share your identity may still be the right person. Trust what you notice in the first few sessions.
Availability changes constantly. A directory listing does not mean someone is accepting clients. Expect to contact several people.
Ask about fit directly. Most therapists offer a consultation. You can ask about their experience with your concerns, how they work, and what they know about your community. You are allowed to interview them.
Not finding anyone is common. If you have been looking for a while without success, that is a supply problem, not a reflection on you.
