    UNDERSTANDING YOUR WINDOW OF TOLERANCE

What is the Window of Tolerance?

Your "window of tolerance" is the zone where you can process emotions and thoughts effectively.

Trauma can narrow this window, leading to:

    - Hyperarousal (feeling anxious, panicked, overwhelmed)

    - Hypoarousal (feeling numb, shut down, disconnected)

EMDR therapy helps widen your window of tolerance over time.

    Visual Resources:

    - Search "Window of Tolerance diagram" for helpful visual guides

    - Discuss your personal window patterns during our sessions

    GROUNDING TECHNIQUES FOR TRAUMA RESPONSES

Use these when you feel overwhelmed, dissociated, or outside your window of tolerance:

    5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Technique

    Notice and name:

    - 5 things you can SEE

    - 4 things you can TOUCH

    - 3 things you can HEAR

    - 2 things you can SMELL

    - 1 thing you can TASTE

This technique brings you back to the present moment.

    Bilateral Stimulation for Self-Soothing

    - Butterfly hug: Cross arms over chest, tap alternating shoulders

    - Bilateral tapping: Tap knees alternately while seated

    - Walking: Notice the alternating rhythm of your steps

    - Eye movements: Slowly move eyes left-right while thinking of a safe place

These use similar mechanisms to EMDR and can help regulate your nervous system.

    Container Exercise

Imagine a container (box, safe, vault) where you can temporarily "store"

overwhelming thoughts or memories between sessions. Visualize placing

difficult material inside and closing it securely. You can open it when

    you're ready and supported.

    Safe/Calm Place Visualization

Identify a real or imagined place where you feel completely safe and calm.

Practice visiting this place in your mind, noticing all sensory details.

This becomes a resource you can access anytime you need regulation.

    SELF-CARE BETWEEN SESSIONS

Processing trauma is demanding work. Honor your healing process:

    Physical Self-Care:

    - Get adequate sleep (trauma processing happens during sleep)

    - Move your body gently (walking, stretching, yoga)

    - Eat regularly and stay hydrated

    - Limit alcohol and caffeine if they affect your regulation

    Emotional Self-Care:

    - Journal about your experiences and progress

    - Connect with safe, supportive people

    - Engage in activities that bring you joy

    - Practice self-compassion (talk to yourself as you would a friend)

    Between-Session Support:

    - Use your container exercise if material feels overwhelming

    - Practice your safe/calm place visualization

    - Return to grounding techniques as needed

    - Remember: healing isn't linear; fluctuations are normal

    Why Movement Helps:

Trauma is stored in the body. Gentle, mindful movement can help:

    - Release stored tension and stress

    - Reconnect you with your body

    - Regulate your nervous system

    - Build sense of safety and control

Remember: These resources supplement our work together but don't replace it.

Bring questions, observations, and experiences to our sessions so we can

integrate them into your healing process.

Your trauma history matters, and so does your healing. You deserve support, patience, and compassion from others and from yourself.
